Description

Skid Sprag

The ZMS Skid Sprag is a portable rail-wagon safety device designed to prevent the unintended movement of underground rail wagons and bogies. It acts as a physical wheel-blocking mechanism, creating resistance against the wheel to help maintain controlled and safe rail operations.

Manufactured from durable cast iron, the wedge-shaped sprag is suitable for heavy-duty use in harsh underground mining environments. Its portable design allows it to be deployed quickly on both level and inclined track sections.

Key Features

  • Robust cast-iron construction
  • Portable and easy to position
  • Wedge design provides strong grip and resistance
  • Suitable for level and inclined track conditions
  • Compatible with standard underground bogie wheels
  • Designed for abrasive underground environments
  • Painted or powder-coated finish
  • Suitable for individual or bulk supply

Applications

ZMS Skid Sprags can be used for:

  • Securing rail wagons during loading and unloading
  • Underground gold, platinum and chrome mining operations
  • Maintenance and track-repair work
  • Temporary wagon control on gradients
  • Shaft-bottom and haulage systems
  • Emergency fail-safe applications
  • Preventing movement during brake or coupling failure

How It Works

The skid sprag is placed directly in front of or behind the rail-wagon wheel. If the wagon begins to move, the wheel engages with the sprag and the wedge-shaped design creates resistance to prevent it from rolling.

Correct placement is essential. The sprag should only be used on a stable rail surface and must be positioned securely before work begins.

Technical Specifications

  • Material: Cast iron
  • Design: Wedge or skid type
  • Application: Rail-wagon wheel blocking
  • Compatibility: Standard underground bogie wheels
  • Finish: Painted or powder-coated
  • Compliance: Manufactured to mine-safety standards

Benefits

  • Helps prevent unintended wagon movement
  • Improves safety during loading, maintenance and repair work
  • Provides a fail-safe against brake or coupling failure
  • Reduces the risk of accidents and equipment damage
  • Quick deployment improves operational efficiency
  • Suitable for demanding underground conditions

Safety and Maintenance

Inspect the skid sprag for wear, deformation or damage before every use. Damaged or deformed sprags must not be deployed. Always ensure correct positioning and follow all applicable mine-safety procedures.

Clean the sprag after use to remove dirt and debris. Inspect the protective coating regularly and recoat exposed areas when necessary. Replace the sprag when wear or deformation exceeds safe operating limits.
